XMRV/ME/CVS en Human “Rumor” Virussen IX

Done. Case closed. Finito, lights off, The End.

Ik verzin het niet. Dit zijn de woorden in een editorial in Science over de laatste ontwikkelingen m.b.t. de link tussen CVS/ME en het retrovirus XMRV. Van de twee nog aangekondigde major studies m.b.t. XMRV is nu de eerste binnen. In verschillende laboratoria werden de bloedmonsters van eerder in een artikel in Science opgevoerde positieve patiënten nog eens bekeken. Bottom line?

Zelfs de grootste voorvechter van het WPI, Mikovits, geeft zich nu gewonnen.

UPDATE: Nieuw in Science:

In one corner was Judy Mikovits, research director at the Whittemore Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease (WPI) in Reno, Nevada, and the main champion of the idea that XMRV and its relatives play a role inCFS. Her opponent, an erstwhile supporter,was heavyweight retrovirologist John Coffin of the Tufts University Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences in Boston.

Eerst maar even het onderzoek:

Contaminatie all the way. Hoewel Mikovits & co altijd hebben volgehouden dat de anderen (en dat waren er veel) niet de juiste methoden gebruikten zijn ze zelf ook niet in staat het kaf van het koren te scheiden. Sterker nog. In een tweede studie onderzochten een paar co-auteurs van de originele (Lombardi) studie een paar in de studie gebruikte originele samples.

A reexamination by Silverman and Das Gupta of the samples they used shows that some of the CFS peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) DNA preparations are contaminated with XMRV plasmid DNA.

Even disease advocates who welcome the attention XMRV has brought to CFS believe the time has come to put this line of research to rest […] Many retrovirologists wish the entire controversy, which has ensnarled dozens of labs and cost millions of dollars, would simply disappear. “All of it’s a waste of money and it’s wrong,” says Robert Gallo, head of the Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore, Maryland. “It’s like a bad dream.”

UPDATE:

When Mikovits and Coffin took the stage at the meeting, which was organized by IACFS/ME (an international association devoted to the disease)and attracted 460 researchers and patients, they sat on opposite sides of the lectern. During their introductions, Coffin clasped his hands in front of his mouth, looking like a man in prayer who wished this would all stop. Neither addressed the other by name, and they avoided eye contact.
